The Monument of Liberty (a.k.a. Shipka Monument) is a monumental sculpture of St. Nicholas peak. The monument was erected in order to perpetuate the feats of the fallen for the freedom of Bulgaria in the place defended during the Shipka battle, around which the decisive for the Russian-Turkish war and the Liberation of Bulgaria fought in the summer of 1877. The monument is a part of the Shipka Park Museum.
The idea for the construction of the monument was proposed at the Constituent National Assembly on April 13, 1879 by MPs Petko Karavelov, Petar Beron and Petko R. Slaveikov.
