Mishkova Niva

The most famous monument of the ancient Thracian culture in the area of the town of Malko Tarnovo is the sanctuary in the Mishkova Niva area.

The Mishkova Niva Sanctuary is part of a large complex, located about 3 - 3.5 km southwest of Malko Tarnovo, on the left bank of Deliiska River, next to the state border with the Republic of Turkey. It consists of a fortress on the top of the Great Garden, mines at its foot, a mound necropolis, a fortified suburban villa from the Roman era, and the so-called Golyama Mogila. The complex has been known since the beginning of the 20th century and was originally reported as a sanctuary to Apollo because of the inscriptions transferred from the site to the city.

The big hill is the highest peak in the Bulgarian Strandzha - 710 m altitude. Its name comes from the fortress of the peak that served as a refuge, watchtower and guards of the region until and during the Roman period, but was smashed by treasure hunters in the last quarter of the 20th century. The fortress wall is made up of different size and shape stones, tightly seamless. The thickness of the wall is about 1.20-1.30 m. In places there are pieces of bricks and metallurgical slag. The area enclosed by the fortress wall has a diameter of about 100 m. Inside there are weak remains of rooms.

About 30 meters southwest of the highest point on the top of the gravel rock are saved rock cuttings. The traces of rock cuttings at the top in the form of pits indicate that during a very early period, probably in the 2 nd beginning of 1 thousand BC, a rock sanctuary functioned in this place, which began to function as a fortress through shorter periods. For centuries, the site has not been studied archaeologically.
