The Regional Museum of History in Bourgas is the largest museum in Southeastern Bulgaria. It was established in 1912 as a private museum of the Debelt Bourgas Archaeological Society by a group of intellectuals and advocates for revealing the historical past of the Bourgas lands. The first chairman of the Archaeological Society is the regional governor Hristo Bogoev, and the first head of the museum is Pavel Vodenicharov. Over the next thirty years, the first museum collections were created with unique archaeological and ethnographic values.
In 1946 the members of the company handed over the museum to the Municipality and it was declared a National Museum, Burgas. The director and the young scientist and archaeologist Ivan Galabov were appointed (1918 - 1978). He laid the foundations of archaeological science and modern museum work in the Bourgas region, and later became a professor at the St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna.
From 1953 it became a Regional Museum, and later it was transformed into the Regional Directorate "Cultural and Historical Heritage". From the 200th anniversary of the Ministerial Decree, RMH has been approved as a Regional Museum for the Bourgas District, which organizes the search, research and study of the cultural heritage in the region, preserves it in its funds and presents it to the public.
