Temple-monument St. Alexander Nevski

St. Alexander Nevski is an Orthodox temple-monument in Sofia, which is a cathedral temple of the Bulgarian patriarch. In 1955, it was declared a cultural monument of national importance. The square that is located around the cathedral has the same name.

 

The temple is designed by the Russian architect Prof. Alexander Pomerantsev (1848 - 1918), an Italian alumni, assisted by Russian architects Alexander Smirnov (1861 -?) And Alexander Yakovlev (1879-1951) and was erected at the highest place at that time in Sofia - 552 m above sea level.

 

The first project (1884 - 1885) was made by academic arch. Ivan Bogomolov, after whose death Professor Arch. Pomerantsev completely changed the project. The final project was completed in 1898. The construction of the temple began in 1904 and was completed in 1912, with a total implementation amounting to a total of 5.5 million leva. The temple was sanctified on August 24, 1924.
