Sofia Roman amphitheater

The Roman Amphitheater of Sofia is an archaeological monument located in the central part of Sofia, 300 m away from the Eastern Gate of ancient Serdika.

It is a complex of several important antique buildings - a Roman theater dated from the end of the 2nd century 3rd century and an amphitheater dated from the end of the III rd beginning of the 4th century. The amphitheater is the 77th antique monument of this type found in the world and its size is close to the Colosseum in Rome. The dimensions of the oval arena of the Serdika Amphitheater are: 60.5 meters long and 43 meters wide. The combination of a Roman theater and a late antique amphitheater is unique worldwide.

The discovery was made accidentally in April 2004 during the construction of the Arena di Serdica Hotel. As early as 1919, a testimony of his whereabouts was found - a stone slab with an illustration of gladiatorial battles.
