Rudozem

Rudozem is a small town in southern Bulgaria, Smolyan region, administrative center of Rudozem municipality, which includes 22 settlements.

It is located southeast of Smolyan in the Western Rhodopes, in the valley of Arda River, about 700 meters above sea level. The settlement is mentioned under the name Palas in Ottoman documents from 1676. It entered the territory of Bulgaria with the Bucharest Treaty of 1913. It was renamed to Rudozem in 1934. With the development of the ore mining and ore processing industry in the region since 1945, it is experiencing economic growth, and from a small village it has become a town with a population of over 10,000 inhabitants in the 1980s. The gradual decline of production in the 1990s experienced a demographic collapse and its population declined to 3900 inhabitants by 2010.
